In the past we have given a gift of a goat to a village in southern africa, and the gift certificate that evidences that is given to a recipient in our family.

However that is still really charity. What I really love to see is where a poor community makes do with the meagre resources they have to try and get ahead by producing a product and selling it to support their community.

If you haven’t heard of Elephant painting it’s exactly that. A painting produced be an elephant. They are, it seems, very proficient painters, holding the brush in their trunk. The result is quite stunning and quite an achievement for an animal.

So this community in Thailand is producing Elephant Dung Paper and making beautiful elephant paintings on it.

It helps in supporting a community of people more unlucky than us who are doing something for themselves and demonstrating their entrepreneurial spirit.
