Repositioning cruises usually come at the end of a cruise season. Lets say a particular ship has been north, or south, for whale watching and touristing in the summer. When the summer ends it’s time to take it south, or north, for the next summer in the other hemisphere.
These cruises, like any other special deals, have their advantages and disadvantages. For example if the ship has to get somewhere it isn’t likely to spend lots of time stopping into all the interesting ports along the way. That’s for the full fare paying passengers some other time.

Why? Firstly it’s what I said before. The cruise line wants to fill every cabin if they can, even if they have to discount. Secondly they know that if the people on the ship spend more time on board rather than on shore they tend to spend more money on board, at the bar, casino and so on. You know what I mean. So it’s still worthwhile for them.
How do you find a repositioning cruise? Obviously the travel agents. Look for a ship that is moving from, say, Alaska to the south at the end of the summer. Or Europe and the Med. Pick your time right and do some research and you’ll be surprised at how cheap a cruise can be.
