More and more people are becoming aware of the impact our activities have had on this precious planet of ours, and are attempting to move to more sustainable lifestyles.

Now whilst an individual purchase of carbon credits isn't going to mitigate the effects of global warming all by itself, it is a small step on the right path. And if we all take small steps, including the giving of green gifts, then things start to happen.

But many people aren't exactly sure how carbon credits work, or where or how to buy them.

A carbon credit is a way of offsetting your, or his, carbon footprint, or the amount of carbon you produce. Here's an example. A car has a carbon emitting effect. It depends on the size of the car, the fuel type, the amount of miles travelled and so on. And it's possible to calculate this for every car.

Once you've done that you can purchase enough carbon credits to offset the amount of carbon emitted by the car. Or anything.

How does purchase of carbon credits offset the car's emissions? Well the company that you purchase the credits from then puts the money into carbon positive projects which should create a positive carbon effect roughly equal to the negative carbon effect of the car.

Maybe they do that by waste recycling, or planting trees, or funding renewable energy or any one of a number of methods.

Now of course if he couldn't care less about his effect on the planet then the best green Christmas gift in the world isn't going to be well received, so you need to remember that. Although it couldn't hurt to give him a good book about how our activities are affecting the future of our children, maybe if he reads the book then next year he'll be much more receptive to carbon credits as a Christmas gift.
